Tangible Results in Efforts Against Human Trafficking in PH

Trafficking is the illegal trade in persons by force, deception, violence, taking advantage of vulnerability, or similar means, for the purpose of exploitation such as forced labor, sexual exploitation, removal and sale of organs, and armed activities.

According to the United Nations, 2.4 million people across the globe are victims of human trafficking at any one time, with 80 percent of them exploited as sex slaves. In sex trafficking alone, children and adults are abused in the commercial sex industry, generating profits of $99 billion annually for the criminals who exploit them. Eight out of every 10 victims of human trafficking are female, and four out of these eight are minors.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has issued five separate orders of preventive suspension (OPS) against All Overseas International Placement Co. Inc. after 38 of its applicants and the POEA itself filed complaints of various recruitment violations against the agency.

President Benigno Aquino honored 33 distinguished and outstanding overseas Filipinos and foreign-based organizations from 12 countries during the awarding ceremonies of the 2014 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas last month at the Malacañang Palace. 

 Diaspora as Aid to Development

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) on Tuesday said that its diaspora to development program strengthened global Filipinos' ties to their home country at the same time helping develop the economy.

CFO Secretary Imelda Nicolas said on Tuesday in Manila Hotel that "remittances help push growth but sharing their talents and passions within the homeland " would be better.

Nicolas also pushing and use the term "Overseas Filipinos" instead of "OFWs" to include people who live abroad, but not for work – unlike the OFWs or Temporary Migrants who are expected to return to the Philippines after their employment contract ends. There are also the permanent residents and naturalized citizens of other countries (Permanent Migrants), and those who are abroad not because of employment but may be undocumented (Irregular Migrants).
