According to data obtained by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), Japan is the Top 3 country of destination among Filipino emigrants in 1981-2018, comprising about 6.21% of the total Filipino emigrant population during this period.
In the early 1980s, an average number of 136 Filipino emigrants were flying to Japan yearly. This figure rose abruptly in 1989 when the CFO recorded more than a thousand Filipino emigrants en route to Japan. This number grew steadily until 2006 when the highest count in a year was observed at a total of 9,742.
However, the number of Japan-bound Filipino emigrants started to gradually decline from 2007 to 2018. Despite this, Filipinos still constituted the third largest group of foreigners and until today, constitute the largest English-speaking foreign community in Japan.
